198 people arrested in Benue, police give reason for the action
– The commissioner of police, Fatai Owoseni, says a total of 198 people have been arrested in Benue
– The police commissioner confirms that 19 suspected cultists have also been arrested in the state recently
– He also confirms that some weapons were recovered from some of the suspects
The commissioner of police in Benue, Fatai Owoseni, has revealed that a total of 198 people have been arrested and are currently facing prosecution in courts for allegedly violating the state’s open grazing prohibition law.
Vanguard reports that Owoseni made the disclosure in Makurdi, the capital of the state on Tuesday, June 5, saying the suspects included those involved in cattle rustling and those who engaged in open grazing of cattle.

According to Owoseni, the police command arrested 19 suspects over the clash that happened between rival cult groups in Otukpo local government area of the state.
“Of that number, we have been able to establish and identify seven as members of the cult groups, while 12 others were held for their complicity in the matter.
“On the whole, 30 suspects were arrested for cult-related activities within the last one month in the state,” he said.
Concerning robbery, Owoseni said 14 suspects were arrested recently with 13 different calibre of prohibited firearms, including four AK-47 rifles and 23 locally-made rifles.
He explained that the recovered locally-made rifles were fabricated to suit AK-47 ammunition.
