Lagos State Govt. Pull Down Oshodi Market,Put Traders In Tears

Last weekend, the Lagos state Government demolished a market which is located at Oshodi area, called Olorunsogo market, while all traders in the area are in state of agony following the pulling down of the market.

The pulling down of the market which contained 14-building plazas housing, 368 units of shops, 144 open stores and 129 small units stores for meat sellers was carry out around 12; 00PM on Saturday.

The destroyed properties which are assorted are curtain materials to hangs poles, electrical appliances, beauty kits and sewing machines e.t.c

A source recalled that in 2016, the Mosafejo Market in Oshodi was also demolished in the early stage of the year, which makes the traders in area began the year with tears, while this year the federal government also demolished another market.

The Lagos state government ordered the state police and Task Force officials to guard the area, to prevents area boys from causing trouble in the area.

According to one of the traders: the demolishing processing still continues, because the Access Bank building and the shopping complex were pulled down yesterday.

She said “those that carried out the demolition came at midnight on Saturday, especially at a time when many of the traders have travelled to the village for Christmas and were yet to return.

“Most of their goods were inside the shops as at the time the demolition was carried out. I could not pick anything from my shop because it was at dawn before I could come here. The value of items destroyed is several millions of naira, as I just stocked for the New Year. Though we were served notice to vacate the place, we were, however, not told the specific time the demolition would be carried out.”

The traders at Ojudo Market received a report that the Federal government also planning to pull down their market, while they gathered at the Lagos state House of Assembly to prevent them.

Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the House had a conversation with the traders, while the traders urged him to intervene in the matter, to prevent the state government from demolish their market.

Mr. Obasa advised the traders to calm down, promising to contact the executive over the issue.

Alhaja Fadeke Bello, the speaker of the Ojodu Retail Market branch traders both men and women said they are amazed when the state government officials gave them just one day notice to pack up.

He said: “They called us for an emergency meeting yesterday that they were coming today to demolish the market and we told them that we could not accept that because of the short notice. This was why we decided to come and inform the governor, Speaker of the Assembly and our Iyaloja General, Alhaja Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.”
