Buhari Explained Why He Re-nominated Magu As EFCC Chairman

Following the renomination of Mr. Magu as the Chairman of EFCC, Economic and Financial Crime Commission by the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari.

Yesterday,the senate disagreed with President Buhari for the second time, over the nomination of two offended top government officials, opposing the views of the president's, on the culpability,claiming that Engr. Babachir David Lawal, the secretary to the government of federation (SGF), was involved in a contract scam of PINE( Presidential Initiative on North-East).

But President Buhari dismissed the accusation in a two separate letters sends to Bukola Saraki, the Senate President.

According to President Buhari in the first letter,explained the reason why he renominated Mr. Magu as the Chairman of EFCC,claiming that he has taken administrative steps over his decision.

While in the second letter, he brings out a mistake in the Senate Ad hoc Committee's report, accused Mr. Lawal, the SGF of contract fraud in PINE.

President Buhari said his aim over the re-nomination of Magu was to “maintain the current momentum” in the fight against corruption.

Buhari noted:“It is in the above context that I, therefore, request the gracious indulgence of this distinguished Senate to favourably accept my re-nomination of Mr Ibrahim Magu Mustapha for the position of chairman of the EFCC, having received adequate clarification concerning the matters relied upon by the Senate in arriving at its decision,”

Over the issued of Mr. Lawal,the SGF Buhari stated: “Consequently, I am of the view that barring other considerations that may arise as a result of subsequent investigation of Engr Lawal by the interim ad-hoc committee, the current report as presented to the Presidency, in its own right, does not meet the principles of fair hearing and compliance with the Senate Rules for conduct of investigations in matters relating to abuse of office by public officers,” .

SGF, Senator Shehu Sani, the ad-hoc committee chairman dismissed Buhari statement and denied some of the assertion.

Senator Sani said: “Corruption in the judiciary and others is treated with insecticide while corruption in the government (executive arm) is treated with deodorant,” .

Mr. Sani also said that out of nine senators who signed the adhoc committee report, seven senators declared that President Buhari letter is''full of falsehood.”

In conclusion the senate declared that they did not believe that the letter was writen by President Buhari ,saying that the SGF and his peoples in Presidency might wrote the letter and forward it to the senate.

After the meeting,Senator Aliyu Sabi, the Senate spokesman disclosed this to a newsmen,added that Mr. Magu would be transfer to legislative procedures of the Senate for his final confirmation.
