Twitter said the change was made as a complement to the refreshing of the social network's brand which began last year, highlighting that the new icon is meant to encourage new users to quickly personalize their accounts, “We noticed that some people kept the egg default profile photo because they thought it was fun and cute, but we want people to use this space to show us who they are! The new default image feels more like an empty state or placeholder, and we hope it encourages people to upload images that express themselves.” Twitter's announcement read.
Another reason given for the change is that accounts bearing the egg icon have become associated with those created to harass persons, as such account are not quickly personalized if they are eventually personalized at all, this twitter feels is unfair to new users who may be yet to personalize their accounts.
Twitter's new icon was created to reflect a gender-neutral human figure, so as to accommodate people of all disposition. "We reviewed many variations of our figure, altering both the head and shoulders to feel more inclusive to all genders," said Twitter.
