China has a population of over 1.3 billion people, just last week Facebook announced that it's native chat app Messenger, which means only China and India with a population slightly over 1.2 billion are now more populated than Facebook Messenger.

Messenger was launched in 2011 but didn't take off until 2014 when Facebook removed the chat app from its main app.

Messenger reached a milestone of 1 billion monthly activd users in July 2016 from about 500 million users in November 2014.

Messenger credits the additional 200 million users it has acquired in 8 months to the new features such as video calling, location sharing, a camera with stickers, masks, frames and other effects it has added in the last few months.

Messenger is gradually becoming more than just a messaging app, it's becoming its own social sphere where people can share everyday moments and interactions more privately and independently of the Facebook main app.

With Messenger and WhatsApp, which the company bought in 2014 in a deal valued at $22 billion, Facebook owns two of the largest chat apps. More than 1 billion people regularly use WhatsApp.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes Facebook's messaging apps will be key to driving the social media giant's success in coming years.

"Messenger is going to be the next big platform for sharing privately," Zuckerberg said during his keynote remarks at last year's developer conference F8.

Why do you think Facebook is getting more popular, think it will overtake China as populous in the near future? Let's hear from you.
