Drama in court as woman narrates how husband picked stick, threatened to break her head for ‘borrowing’ his N1,500; seeks divorce
– A woman, Balikit Lateef, sought to be divorced from her husband, as he was irresponsible and not interested in his family’s welfare
– She also said he was not generous, and almost broke her head with a stick at one time, because she borrowed N1,500 out of his money, in order to feed their five children and meet other needs
– The judge dissolved the marriage, granted her custody of the children, and also ordered the defendant to pay for their monthly upkeep
A certain Balikit Lateef, instituted a divorce suit against her husband, Ahmed Lateef, at the Oja Oba/Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo state.
In her suit, the plaintiff stated that her husband was irresponsible and uninterested in the welfare of herself and their five children, Tribune reports.
She prayed the court to dissolve the 18-year-old marriage and grant her custody of the children.
She stated: “My 18-year-old marriage has been uninteresting and not romantic all because of my husband’s unloving attitude towards me and our children.
“He prefers to be in the company of his friends than stay at home and spend quality time with me and the children.
“My husband is not interested in my welfare; he gives me no attention anytime I’m sick, and doesn’t care if I live or die.
“He’s not generous with his money. He once kept N10, 000 with me and I borrowed N1, 500 from it to feed our children and meet some other needs in the home since he has abandoned his responsibilities.
“He went mad and reported me to our landlord’s wife. Not yet satisfied, he chased me all over the neighbourhood with a stick, threatening to break my head with it.
“I left his house and moved to my parents place in Oyo when I took ill, and he gave me no attention. He never called on the phone to ask after my health or came to visit me.
“My lord, he has never been interested in our children’s education. I withdrew them from the private school they were attending to a public school because I couldn’t cope with the high fees.
“Today, our first child is learning a trade because there is no money to send her to school.
“I decided to come to court so that it will awaken him to his responsibilities as husband and father. On hearing that I’ve come to court, he beat the hell out of me.”
The accused husband was however absent at the hearing; despite being served a court summon and hearing.
Rendering his verdict, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade pointed out that the defendant’s refusal to come to court showed he was not ready to save his marriage. He added that there was no more love in the union, and thereby dissolved it.
Odunade also granted the plaintiff custody of the five children; and mandated the defendant to pay N15, 000 monthly as their feeding allowance, and be responsible for their education and health care.
The defendant was also ordered to give the plaintiff the sum of N12,000 as one-year house rent for a new apartment, and also give her N3,000 to pack her belongings from his house.
Meanwhile, A source previously reported that a woman, identified as Dasola Adeosun, asked the Ile Tuntun Customary Court in Mapo hall, Ibadan, Oyo state, to grant her divorce, as she could not endure her husband’s issues anymore.
According to Dasola, her husband was a ritualist who had repeatedly attempted to sacrifice their two-year-old son for money rituals.
She also said the man had formed the habit of sniffing her panties and fingers each time she returned home after travelling, trying to find out if she had sexual relations with another man.
