Shehu Sani shares throwback photos while awaiting trial for treason in prison
Senator Shehu Sani, representing Kaduna Central on Sunday, June 10, in a tweet shared throwback photos of himself in a prison cell, Aba, Abia state and Kiri kiri Maximum Security Prison, Lagos state.
The All Progressive Congress (APC) senator with then prison number 95/1186 was serving a 15 year sentence in 1995 for treason against the Military Junta and managing an unlawful society, the Campaign for Democracy CD.
The pictures also tell the story of his fight against bad rulers and the support for the emergence of democracy.
Sani, then the vice chairman of the Campaign for Democracy who was imprisoned between 1995 to 1998 by the late Gen. Sani Abacha military junta for rooting for democracy.
He was also implicated in the 1995 phantom coup during General Sani Abacha’s regime. After being jailed for life, his sentence was later commuted to 15 years by the chairman of Special Military Tribunal, late Major-General Patrick Aziza.
Sani and former president Olusegun Obasanjo even shared a cell together during the latter’s prison sentence. He was released from life imprisonment when democracy was restored in 1999.
